Mrs. Smith is a very famous teacher in her school. She had a habit of saying “I Love You all” to her class children every morning right after the prayer. However, somewhere she used to dislike one boy called Teddy of class 7. Teddy is a very sweet boy but his performance in curricular and in co-curricular activities were not up to the mark. This made Mrs. Smith very annoying to him.
After term examination as per Mrs. Smith’s expectations Teddy performed very badly in all subjects. His grades were poor and in the term’s progress card Mrs. Smith wrote, “Very Bad performance”. This continued in the next term examination too. The Progress card was sent out to the Principal’s desk for signature, who was alarmed at the sight of the teacher’s remark……
As per Teddy's Story above we have to discuss following scenario
- What discussion could have taken place between Principal and Mrs. Smith regarding Teddy’s performance?
- What would be the scenario of Teddy’s performance after principal’s intervention?

1. Teddy did not get good marks in his examination, so Mrs Smith write very bad performance on his progress card and gave this to principal for signature. Principal asks to Mrs Smith why his performance is not good and does not score up to mark. Mrs Smith told that he does not study well and not focus in his performance.
ReplyDelete2. After principal intervention Teddy realize that he is not doing well which is why teachers also do not love him. he starts study well to score good marks.
1. Principal may have observed that for consecutive two years Mrs. Smith is giving him remark of "Very bad performance". Hence may be Principal called her asking about the harsh comment and what measures she took to improve Teddy's performance.
ReplyDelete2. I believe after Principal's intervention Mrs. Smith realize that she has just assessed him in what he is doing but not help him in order to overcome his problems and she may have put extra effort to get to know him and solve his problem. which may have help in improvement in Teddy's performance at school.
Very good, Neha Rao.
DeletePrincipal might have ask Mrs.Smith to find out the reason of poor grades of Teddy. Principal can ask Mrs Smith not to write negative statement on the progress card of Teedy as it would create negative impact on his mind.
ReplyDeleteYes. Very true, Urvi.
Delete1.teddy was not.good in curriculur and cocurricular activites he did not score well and mrs.smith would.have told.that he has not improved
ReplyDelete2.The discussion should have been what should the next step be to improve the performance of teddy if special attention is needed so school can provide which will build his confidence
Principal's intervention can help Mrs. Smith to realize that it's not worth to asses the student on its grades. Mrs. Smith might have also realised that student facing any sort of problem requires some more attention and concern.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteAnswer 1: According to me, Mrs Smith instead of being concerned about Teddy's deteriorating performance remarked him as "Very bad performance" which might have led to demotivation further in his performance.
ReplyDeleteBeing a teacher, Mrs Smith should have firstly observed his performance keenly and found out the reasons for his such performance instead of tagging him because all students cannot have the same level of thinking or the same level of development either in terms of physical or mental capabilities
On the other hand, similarly all teachers do not carry same kind of behavior or attitude as Mrs Smith.
Answer 2: According to my perspective, Principal might have taken this case in a very different manner and not like Mrs. Smith because person unlike teachers carry different levels of understanding, behavior, experience in terms of teaching or general behavior.
The Principal instead of neglecting his performance might have made Mrs.Smith to understand his level of thinking and find out where he is lacking in his performance or the Principal himself/herself might have intervene in this scenario as the level of experience or understanding differ from person to person a Principal being an experienced person would have been successful in tackling this situation because if Mrs,. Smith could have handled this situation earlier Teddy's performance would not have been deteriorated to such an extent.
Very good, Chitrakala.
DeleteAfter looking at the Progress card, Principal would like to know the reason from Mrs. Smith for such kind of remark. So, Principal called Mrs. Smith in his office and asked her that he saw a remark ‘Very Poor Performance’ given to Teddy in both the terms examination. He wants to know the reason for the same.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Smith explained that this boy has badly performed in both the exams and there was no improvement seen in his performance over the period of time.
On this Principal asked her have she tried to find out why is he not performing or improving. For which Mrs. Smith denied. Then Principal explained and convinced her that being his class teacher it was her duty to find the challenges boy is facing in the class or outside. She needs to understand his issues and try to find solution for the same. Maybe she need to discuss with his parents and also explain the boy importance of the studies and other activities. She needs to help him in improving his performance. Mrs. Smith assured Principal that she will work on it.
As Mrs. Smith has assured Principal, she had a chat with the boy. She tried to understand the challenge he is facing in the class and tried to find solution to it. She also made few alterations in her teaching style so that it becomes easy for children to understand the subject. She also encouraged Teddy to participate in various activities. Over a period of time there was a positive improvement in Teddy’s overall performance. Now, Mrs. Smith started saying ‘I Love you’ to Teddy too.
The Principal might have firstly motivated and corrected Mrs.Smith to change her mindset for the child and think broadly to bring about progress in the child by identfying his strength and weakness. This was only possible if the teacher understood the fact that every child is not the same and so each and every child's abilities and disabilities need to be accepted and accordingly work on it.Also the Principal might have asked to find the little improvements which the child made and mention those improvements in the report card so as to motivate the child.
ReplyDelete2.After the intervention of the Principal the Teacher's outlook would have definately changed and her efforts in identifying the weakness of the child would helped him correct his mistakes and also his minute progress observed and appreciated by the teacher would have motivated the child to do even better. Thus there would definately be drastic improvement seen in the child in his academic performances gradually.
1. Teddy performanced very bad in the examination. Mrs. Smith gave a progress card of teddy to the principal. She said he is very bad in Academic. Principal ask mrs. Smith what we can do to improve his performance. She said he can't score a good marks. Principal suggest to aapriciate the child in classroom, give a task in classroom to teddy to engage. Principal said that to Mrs. Smith because she dislike the teddy.
ReplyDelete2.After the principal intervention, Mrs. Smith started appreciating the teddy in classroom. Teddy also start studying and Teddy's performance was very good.
Principal must have asked Mrs Smith to find out the reason, due to which Teddy is not able to perform well in his examination.
ReplyDeleteMrs Smith did not liked Teddy because he did not score well in the examination But now because of Principal telling him for being Nice to him and finding out the reason for Teddy bad performance,Mrs Smith must have understood to look at other aspects of Teddy perform bad
After Principals intervention Mr Smith must have talked to Teddy and helped him, Teddy must have shared all his problems or the reason of not being able to score well in examination.
ReplyDeleteMrs Smith must hav found out the solution to his problem and help him score well in the Examination
Overall everyone thinking in right direction, that teacher should not give such kind of remarks which is very negative. Such negative comments will have diverse effect on child and he/she may not be able to improve his/her skills ever.
ReplyDeleteHere in this case Principal's role is very important who diagnose teacher's mistake and suggests teacher to identify the cause of low grades in Teddy's performance. The results of this will definitely enhance Teddy's performance in studies.
ReplyDeleteVery good attempt by everyone. Keep it up!!
