Assessment helps in taking decision for planning the teaching learning strategy. It will also help in planning the curriculum of the school. It also helps for taking decisions for the weak students and accordingly planning for the development of those students. It also provides guideline for how much weight age should be given to what all things during learning process.

Different type of assessment have different purpose to fulfill hence when comprehensive assessment is done it uses formative as well as Summitive assessment.
Formative assessment is something in which involvement of students is there and it is done through out year, It gives immediate explicit feedback.
Summitive assessment is cumulative evaluation which is done at the end of the course to find out if long term goals are achieved or not.

Classroom assessment involves both teacher and the students to know the students performance. It helps teacher to get feedback about its teaching and it helps students to analyze its performance.

1. Formative Assessment : It includes not giving marks for completion of task but rather contribute learning through feedback.It is integral part of learning and teaching.
2. Informal assessment : It includes assessment when the teacher ask question during lectures, give task to complete. It is consider as less stressful for students.
3. Formal assesment : This type of assesment take place when students are aware that they are doing particular task for assesment i.e. written exam.
4. Continuous assesment : Continuous assesment helps teacher and students to bring out improvement needed in learning and teaching process.
5. Placement Assesment : It is useful for the teacher to place student in a particular task for a academic programme.

Summative Assesment refers to evaluate the learning and academic achievement of the students at the end if the year.Eg-End of term or mid term exams.
Therefore we can come to a conclusion that formative and summative assessments are comprehensive and two overlapping ways of assessing the learners progress in schools with the common goal of analysing the progress, strenth and weakness of the students.
