- Multilingualism is an integral part of the Indian society. Explain with reference to the characteristics of Indian multilingualism.

Multi lingualism refers to use of many languages by an individual or a group. Multi lingualism in India is not an accident,infact its a process which have evolved over the years which got inherited with the varied culture and races in India.

It has helped the country to develop a sense of acceptance,tolerance and respect for the people belonging to various caste,creed ,section,language and religion.
It has helped to contribute to attain the rich ,distinct and vast cultural heritage.
The use of 2 or more languages either by an individual speaker or by a community of speakers Is referred To as Multilingurism.
ReplyDeleteThere are Total 23 official languages in India. The 2001 census Recorded 30 languages which are spoken by More than a million native speakers. As per language classification Scheme of Linguistic survey of India There are 193 classified languages corresponding to 165 to Mother tongues.
Multilinguarism And Indian society
This common for most of the people to be Bilingual In india. People in Japonians the setting are fluent in 2 or 3 languages and can easily Switch between these languages. Hence bilingualism at the grassroot level.
In India minority languages in contact with dominant languages have tended to be maintained over Generations.
There are complementary nature of languages. Languages are neatly sorted into non competing spheres of activities such as home, social circle Market, school, Media.
In India people extend their identities beyond a particular language because of the social and psychological conditions of Indian Society.
India is a vast country having different languages in different places of India. Since ages Indian multilingualism is carried upon. In ancient times the people migrated from one region to another and came in contact with each other.

An Indian use a particular language at home, another in neighbourhood and another language in formal set-up like education, occupation etc.
One can communicate with two or more languages to transmit the thoughts/ideas. However he/she has mastery in one language which is mainly mother tongue. This language is past on from one generation to next.

When mother tongue is healthy maintain with multilingualism at individual or community level, social, psychological and educational benefits accrue to an individual. Studies have shown that bilingual children have a distinct edge over their monolingual counterparts in terms of their cognitive and intellectual skills,task performance and educational achievements.
2 Multiplicity and linguistic identities :
In India,our cultural and linguistic identities are very pronounced and thus multiple languages and multiple languages identities are the defining features of Indian bilingualism.
3 Maintaince of language as a norm :
In India minority languages are in contact with dominant languages have tended to be maintained over generations. Thus, the languages that we see today,are an assimilation of all the languages which entered India. Very few languages have died out completely. This is because of the multilingual ethos and the non competing roles of languages in the lives of common people.
Multilingualism is the ability to use more than one language by an individual. India is Multilingual country. for many it is a second language and many others as a foreign language.
ReplyDeleteThe Indian education system is truly multilingual in its character. the Bombay municipal corporation runs primary schools in nine language. the three language formula widely in the country aims at developing and strengthening the multilingual character of our educational system.

*Multilinguality also brings with it the opportunity to read and understand the literature of different languages which is a great asset.
Multilingualism can be defined as an occurrence regarding an individual speaker who uses two or more languages, a community of Speakers where two or more languages used or between speakers of two languages.

1.Positively emphasize the value that knowledge of different languages and cultures bring two people's live in general and the classroom in particular.
2.Encouraging students to talk in a more familiar shared languages in classroom would lead to demonstration of behavior and qualities that a teacher had not been aware of before
3.It would also lead to the building of the vocabulary or the vocabulary of the languages to be learnt too
4.Further it would lead to involving all and bringing a change thereby making every classroom an inclusive one.

ReplyDeletevarious language families spoken in 200 states. The existence of all these languages side by side resulted in multilingualism. Knowing two or more than two languages became the need for communication among speech communities as well as individuals. „Multilingualism can be defined as an occurrence regarding an individual speaker who uses two or more languages, a community of speakers where two or more languages are used, or between speakers of two languages. Multilingualism basically arises due to the need to communicate across speech communities.Multilingualism is not a rare but a normal necessity across the world due to globalization and wider cultural communication.
People of same ethnic group usually communicate in one language and the fact is that no speech community lives in isolation. Speech communities or individuals are in regular contact with other group members which brings the need of out-group communication. In the process of out-group communication an individual switches from one language or variety to the other. Thus shows his/her competence/knowledge of two languages or varieties. Specializedcommunication covers domains like religion, education, technology, etc,which sometimes arises the need of knowing a language other than his native language. Other reasons for multilingualism can be: a) Migration or labor mobility.b) Cultural contact etc
